Traditional Be-Kin’s Farm Food Safety Consulting aims to create a personalized program for food safety education and training that is tailored to the needs of small to midsize producers. We identify the farmers' and their farms' specific needs and challenges. We then develop and implement a food safety plan of action while considering the impact of the new guidelines under FSMA on farm operations in rural, urban, and sustainable communities, as well as cooperatives. Our approach includes:
1. Conducting a needs assessment to support customized trainingg
2. Identifying implementation barriers within the targeted audiences
3. Offering education and training workshops
4. Creating a personalized safety plans
5. Providing ongoing support for the targeted audiences
6. Educate, implement, and train on sustainable and specialty crops
The Ancestral Be-Kin’s Alternative Break program is designed for groups of 7 to 21 college students and focuses on exploring the connections between historical injustices, land, community, and Black self-determination.
During the program, students will learn about various social issues including poverty, education reform, refugee resettlement, the environment, healthcare reform, mental health, and immigration. They will then participate in week-long projects with local non-profit organizations, providing them with the opportunity to engage and cooperate with different community partners.
This hands-on experiential learning course includes daily farm stewardship and sustainable agriculture techniques. It also involves visits to local elderly Black farmers and community organizations to give students a comprehensive understanding of the socio-political challenges faced by farmers in sustaining their communities and continuing agrarian living.
In addition, students will have the opportunity to meet with USDA representatives and Black farmer cooperative leaders to gain insights into the policies and practices affecting farmers. The course will also examine the connections between historical injustices, land, community, and Black self-determination. It will include scholarly readings, workshops, interactions with students and faculty from various universities, and interactions with environmental justice advocacy groups.
In the final week of the course, students will work in groups to conduct research for documentary photo/video work or structured interviews with local farmers and community members. the community.
Ancestral Be-Kin is not alone; our roots are deeply interwoven with the elders in the community, whose wisdom has allowed us to flourish. Immersion in our farm means the opportunity for unique and invaluable conversations with and visits to older farmers in this community.
The kind of knowledge and wisdom they hold will never be seen again on this earth.
Experience a community that reflects the memories of the elders about this land, while also contributing to the creation of something new. It's a feeling that is hard to describe: it's about the land, the people, and the construction in a particular place and time, towards the future we all deserve.
Young people will take part in a hands-on, farm-based education program during Ancestral Be-Kin’s Agricultural & Art Summer Camp. The program will involve students in running a small-scale organic farm, including planting, harvesting, and cooking with the produce they grow. This will help students connect with ecology and nutrition.
At the Agricultural & Art Summer Camp, young people will have the opportunity to practice drumming and storytelling throughout the week. The camp will conclude with a skit, a community fish fry, and a traditional West African djembe performance to celebrate Ancestral Be-Kin’s Inaugural Agriculture and Art Summer Camp.
Parents are invited to join us on Friday. We aim to share West African/Afro-American culture with the broader community through drumming, integrated arts, interactive plays, storytelling, dance, and song. Our goal is to bring the experience of arts integration into the local community.
